no turning back

I have officially registered for my first race ever! I am going to run the "Wicked" 10k here in Virginia Beach on October 31st. I think 6.2 miles is pretty doable. Let me tell you, something about hitting the "submit payment" button on the computer and knowing that you've forked over the cash for the race really gives you the motivation to train. I thought I would share it with the blogosphere for some extra accountability as well. Wish me luck, there's no turning back now!

ok question, would you mind telling me how you got into running? Is this something you've always done or picked up again? If you had to start from scratch, how'd you do it? And, how long has it taken you to train for a 10k?
Thanks!

Hey Rachel, I have run off and on since highschool. I've never really been a serious runner though. I have just recently started running regularly for longer distances. I started really gradually. I'd go for power walks with my baby, then I started jogging for half the walk. Eventually I was running 1 or 2 miles 3-4 times a week. If you can comfortably run 2 miles, you can start with an 8 week training plan for a 10k which is what I'm doing. There are lots of other longer plans though if you want to start really easily. Also, lots of plans incorporate walking and running. I'm really quite a beginner in the world of racing and running but I'm really enjoying it and finding that you can run a LOT farther then you think you can. Good luck!

Ok thanks for the info/advice! It's always comforting to know that there are other people out there who start running later. I have also jogged off and on, but I want to do a race!
